Any answer would be such a great help. I want to get some nice highlights but im afraid they'll come out wrong. I know a lot of dark haired friends who highlight their hair and the truth is that it's a disaster. Honestly...I've prolly only seen in my lifetime only 10 brunettes who have had the loveliest highlights in my opinion. Does anyone have any experiences with this...any advice...pics...anything?

Blonde highlights look the best on brunettes. Don't apply too much on each strand. It'll look horrible. Here's a product that I think is great. There is a commercial with Eva Longoria with it. And after she put the highlights on, it looked great. It's called Loreal Paris Hi-Light Styliste. Try the shades, Amber Glaze which is reddish, or Toasted Almond which is Dark Blondish.

Well i know a few different ways. First get it highlighted blond but make sure its pulled through a cap not just chunks. Next U can always bleach the tips and put a funky color on that bleached part like pink or green or w/e u want. Get playful it never really matters i think its just how the person likes it.

I would recommend going a shade or two lighter than your hair color. I would do partial highlighs (possibly in the crown). If you get full highlights it wil possibly not look so natural. I would go to a salon to get it professionally done. Touch ups are not as much as the initial dye job. It is pricier if you have long hair. They usuall run anywhere from 60 to over a $100.

Hi there,

I think if you want a funky cool colour, I would do a full head of foils in bleach and get them as light as possible, and then apply a violet tint over the top of your whole hair.

The effect that this will give is a base colour of a dark brown-violet, and where you have had the blonde foils, the violet will look absolutely amazing!! I have done this on a client of mine recently, and she loved it!!!

It is possible that the hair dresser that did, but i think you killed it by dieing too much in a short period of time...you should wait a couple months and ask a professional to do it. And if you want your true hair color you should get temporary die and wait for your growouts to grow out...

The problem is not so much the color you put on your hair but the condition your hair is in when you color it. Wash your scalp and condition your hair. I don't wash my hair every day because I color every 4-5 weeks (to cover gray). My hair has been shades of red, blonde, brown, and multi. I use Biolage Shampoo and Coral Beach conditioner. After I condition and rinse, I always add a little conditioner to the ends and leave in before I towel dry. My hair looks great all the time! And very soft! Good luck, and don't wash your hair for a couple of days if you can help it, before the next color. The dye wil take care of it.

I have natural strawberry blonde hair, it isn't colored at all. I've been wanting highlights for a while because every year my hair seems to get darker, so now I have a lot of brown in it as well (red, blonde and brown!) It sounds you have quite a lot going on with you're hair! I'm afraid that highlights might be too much because highlights look different of different colours of hair, and you seem to have them all! Actually, before I even read the entire question, I was thinking caramel myself. I'd have to see a picture of you to really be sure, but I think that's a safe bet. I am not sure about the espresso - I think the Caramel will go better with the bronze.

I'm guessing your natural hair colour is black. I think caramel or chocolate highlights would look great with your colouring. Once it is highlighted and because you straighten it a lot, give it a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week. Olive oil is the best natural treatment. Wrap your head in cling wrap or a hot, wet towel for product to penetrate. Leave on for half hour then shampoo. Result - conditioned, shiny locks!

They'd also use the proper strength to achieve the desired tone. I've seen many first time do-it-yourselfers end up with a horrible outcome. Ask lots of questions about what product is being used, then you might be able to try the touch-ups on your own with good results.

Sounds like the Sun (or swimming pool) is doing what it does naturally -- bleach!!

Since you had highlights, the bleaching process removed the color from the bleached strands; I am assuming you didn't have a toner applied to hair after bleaching. This is totally to be expected.

If you used a 'permanent' color product to go dark brown that should slow down the 'wash out' period but not eliminate it. If you used a 'semi-permenant' product that would wash out after a few washings.

My g/f had similar problem but since she gets me to apply the product I bought another shade in same family to apply on the bleached streaks. The look turned out phenominal!! Of course it took extra time for me to protect her bleached strands (used a conditioner and isolated those strands) before applying the base colour. Then after that was processed I used foil to protect the new base color while I applied the complimentary color.

Because of the bleaching previous, the complimentary color took hold and it was as professional looking as one could expect. (No I'm a wanna-be hairdresser).

Then the key was maintaining with a shampoo and conditioner formulated for color-treated hair. Yes over time the original bleached strands faded she got a good 8 or 9 weeks before I had to re-do those strands.

You could use some semi permanent brown on all your hair to refresh the color. it isn't as harsh to your hair, and since your hair color will be fading anyway, you should spare it from permanent color for a while. I would use the john frieda stuff after you re-dye it keep the color longer. Or if you want to make the highlights themselves darker (like a light brown or red or whatever) i would get someone to help you color the highlights with any type of hair dye, and use can get an applicator from sally's beauty supply. the blond will never go away until it grows out, or you can go to a salon and they can fix it by replacing the color, ( I've had friends do this and the blond usually comes back anyway.)

It will ruin them...what happens is...when you're hair is highlighted, it is done with a bleach...the bleach makes the hair more porous, so it acts like a sponge...If you dye your hair red with a temporary hair color, it will not wash all the way out of the highlights, because the porous hair will absorb it, it will probably have a very pink tint to it...I would just pass on this....

It depends on how thick your hair is. I have baby fine hair and I was told my several hairdressers over the years (I'm 38) that my hair follicle is not thick enough to hold two processes. So I have to decide on having straight hair with highlights or curly hair (from a perm) with my natural color.

My hair fried and frizzed out when I had both processes done to my hair. So I chose to have highlights and I gave up wanting a perm.

okay im in hair school and the best thinge i can think of for you to tell them would be you want an all over foil highlight. tell them you want the two colors you said. they will probably ask for a specific red or a specific blonde so you may want to take a picture of the two colors or point it out to them in their swatch book. ask them to do a weaving highlight if you want the highlights especially thin. if you need anything else explained let me know. :)

You won't see much, or any, of a change on black hair unless you bleach first. If you want the results to be intense, it's recommended that you bleach your hair to a light blonde, which means you'll need to bleach a few times. If you do decide to do it, keep an eye on the bleach. Watch it closely. Put the bleach on your roots last because the hair from your head process faster. I'd recommend wrapping the hair in foil after the bleach, or dye, is on so that it doesnt get on the rest of your hair that you dont want dyed. its of course always good if you can get a friend to help you, too.

it sounds to me as if you havent dyed your before, and your hair would only "fall out" or break off if you over dyed it, which is tough to do - i've done a lot to my hair in the past and its actually in really good shape. its more likely that the parts you bleached will turn an orange color after bleaching, but then what you do is get toner in the opposite color from what your hair is now (from a beauty supply shop) and then put the dye over it.. or, actually, you could probably dye right over it without much trouble, but ive always toned.

yes bleach is a dangerous chemical but read up online about how to do it and you should be just fine.

Wow, sounds great, but one word of advice...go to a hairdressers!

I have naturally dark hair and purple will not show on it, let alone on black hair. If you try and bleach ot yourself it will go orange and the purple dye will not work very well. Get the highlights done in a hairdressers and tell them that you want it as light as possible because you want to put purple dye in. I know it costs a lot more but trust me, it will be much better and last longer. Good luck

The answer above mine is pretty much spot on. You will have to bleach it. Purple highlights on black hair would look awesome. Black is perfect for bright highlights. What you need to do is use foils. Select the areas of your hair that you would like to be purple and bleach them as light as you can (use 40 vol bleach). Wash that out and buy a bright hair dye like fudge. Paint it on over the light bits. Wait, and rinse. This is a bit of an effort in that it is tedious, but it is not really that difficult to do. Go for it!

You'll end up looking like a spice girl, and all though that was cute a few years ago, it certainly is not now.

If I were you I would go with lots of Auburn highlights, since blonde would be too .... Light for your dark brown hair (Are we talking almost black, or like a mahogany brown ? ) any way a few face framing ones and a bunch on the under side of your hair.

If you were to just do them all over it looks reeeeeal fake.

You have to apply them carefully because the highlights will be BRILLIANT. I mean very blonde. But you have to sit in the sun for them to work. I would really consider if you wan them because you would have to dye your hair back to get them to go away.

Since your hair is dark, I would not go with blonde highlights. I'm not sure with highlights because most of my friends/family who have gotten them have light hair. Yes I think your hair would look good straight, but before you want to perm it, try a straightener 1st. Go to the mall and sometimes they have people trying to sell straighteners and ask them to straighten your hair.

Your hair is gorgeous! I'd love to have hair that long and thick. Maybe if you put a great conditioner in it (try anti-frizz serum), and had it thinned out you might like it better. Try something like that before you do anything drastic like straightening it. Also remember that if you do straighten it you will have to deal with continual upkeep or you'll have frizzy roots and straight ends... very hard to grow out! Good luck, you're beautiful!

well i would get it straightened but not permanently. just go by a Paul brown straightener . i like it better than the CHI. my natural hair is very curly. and i just straighten it. and i almost got it permanently straightened and im kinda glad i didn't. cause i can do so much more with my hair now. and with the coloring....just go to some hairstylist that knows what there doing. and im sure they could tell you what would look good.

First of all don't permanently get your hair straight... As you get older you will want your curls back!

You should just buy a straightener and spray and straighten your hair daily!

If you want highlights pick a color that would fit your hair... you wouldn't want blonde or pink! :b

as for straightening that would look nice but once your hair started growing out you would have to do it again. you can learn to use a flat iron, that is my suggestion. your hair looks pretty fine and i wouldnt do too much chemically with it.

you can get highlights but i wouldnt go blond. i would go light brown at most. just go to a nice place they should be able to help you. you should be able to ask their opinion and they should be able to give you some options.

You would look really good with highlights!Just don't overdo it and have blond streaks in your hair. Black + Blond = not working. Trust me, I know. My friend, who had a hair color like yours, recently got red tinted highlights and they looked amazing! Not fire engine red, but a subtle color. Don't permanently straighten your hair. It kills your hair more than straightening it regularly every day.

oh my gosh! you are SO pretty. do NOT permanently straighten your hair! love the hair that you have. my hair's frizzy like yours, so i use biosilk. not only does it add shine to your hair, but it smoothes flyaways and takes the frizz out of your hair.

I would would temporarily straighten it and then if you like it, use TRESemme heat resistant spray when it's wet and before straightening. With the bangs I think it would be cute. Don't make it permanent because the curl is classy also.

Honestly, I think because your hair is really dark or almost black, I don't think the highlights will compliment it well. However, if you want to do something about your hair, definately get it straightened. I think you need to get a lot of the length taken off your hair. Go for a good cut and get it thinned out and you should be able to manage to straighten it easily yourself. Do not highlight it. If your hair is in good condition, then it will be shiny and look healthy. If you highlight it, it will dry it out and make it even more frizzy.

if you're not ready to chop off yor hair, start thinking about multi-length bangs. A friend of mine did that last month. Demi bangs that got gradually, chunkily longer. A GREAT face-frame, and an easy way to add interest to not-so-lively hair.

whatever you decide to do, I always let my stylist have a lot of control. I trust her. They're trained to understand individual face-shape and hair types. Take suggestions from them!

What i recomend is to use lemon juice. It lightens your hair and if you put a lot in and does make a HUGE difference its SOO much cheaper than dying it and its REALLY EASY. if you want to highlight your hair put lemon juice just in strands of it. I do it all the time and it comes out great! HAVE FUN!

Bleaching your hair is very damaging. Unless you have done it before (on yourself) I would go to a salon to have it done.

Professional products are made to be healthier on your hair then just what you buy at a store and use at home.

if your hair is a dark color no matter what color you put in it, it won't be bold as if you put it on blonde hair. Bleaching your hair will dry it out faster and if not done right will completely damage your hair and turn it into cotton candy texture. So I suggest maybe lightening it a little by a professional and then maybe you can add this special effects dye. Remember this dye isnt' easy to get out so if you do highlight it your hair will be well on its way to damaged and if you want to take this special effects dye out you will almost have to do the same again just to get it out. Just remember this kind of damage and every color you put in your hair will stay there till you cut it off. Just because you color over it and can't necessarily see it doesn't mean it isn't there. It's okay to bleach your hair; I've done it myself several times now.

Firstly, make sure you're following the instructions that came with your bleaching kit; it sounds stupid, but they are invaluable.

The key thing to remember, to avoid damage, is to make sure you wash your hair, preferably twice, as soon as your hair is bleached to the color you want. This will get out all the excess bleach.

After giving myself blonde highlights, I've found that the new blonde section tend to not feel as healthy for about a week. To combat this, I've used more conditioner on my hair, and made sure to target the bleached areas with conditioner.

Also, you probably take better care of your hair than this, but definitely avoid 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner products if you do this.

Special Effects (Manic Panic, too) is a good semi-permanent dye, however, if you want the color to resemble the sample/swatch, you HAVE to bleach your hair. Also, remember that it may say semi-permanent, but this may not be held true. Consider this: semi-permanent dyes 'stain' your hair...So if you dropped red dye on white carpet, you could probably get there stain out, but only after washing it over and over, and even then, you may have a hint of pinkish color left over. It's the same thing with your hair, so semi-permanent dyes wash out over time, but you may need to dye over them or bleach them out if you get tired of the color.

For darker reds, you do not necessarily need to achieve a high-lift, so its ok if your hair is still a little yellow after bleaching. Sometimes you can apply a darker red dye right onto brownish or black hair, and it will leave a reddish shimmer, but usually nothing dramatic and you may be the only person who notices.

However, if you are going for blues, purples, or anything pastel, then your hair MUST be very light blonde (like the inside of a banana peel) to achieve those results. If you try to apply purple or especially blue dye onto hair that is still yellow and brassy, then the results will be greenish and undesireable.

Bleaching hair can be damaging, but it all really depends on the condition of your hair to begin with. If your hair has already been treated with dye, highlights, perms/relaxers, then it could be questionable whether or not you should bleach. Overprocessing hair can be very upsetting, because your hair WILL fall apart (it happened to me!). Virgin (unprocessed) hair is usually more forgiving. Also, to achieve the appropriate level of lift, you may need to bleach your hair more than once. If you have very dark brown-black hair, you might not be able to achieve that highest level at

all. Just keep in mind that bleaching your hair strips it, and will change the texture, so be prepared.

If you are still uneasy, I would try to find a local alternative salon so a professional can help you along. Everything I have stated is from my own experiences (about 6+ years of dying my own hair ever color of the rainbow). I have had many successes and a handful of failures. One summer I bleached my hair too many times and I had to shave my head because my hair was breaking when I combed it. Those were the days! :)

Looking at the details you given it sounds quite short. If you have short hair its best to use a highlighting cap, NOT FOILS! Foils are too messy they will spill to area which you dont want highlighted on short hair. America or UK. I know both America and the UK sell the Loreal Highlighting Kit (perfect Blonde). It comes complete with the bleech and a cap and hook. This way you hook the hair that you want to highlight through the holes, it gives a more neater look. If you want them thicker just pull thicker strands through.

After putting in the brown hair dye, at least wait 2 days before lighting the hair. It might turn a dodgey colour if you do it strait after. The instructions should be included in the highlighting kit. However when lightening any hair you should always leave the bleach in for 30 minutes, never hessitate and take it off beofre that time, they will turn orange.

I would highly NOT recommend doing highlights yourself. Go to supercuts - they only charge 20-30 dollars for highlights.

Don't do it!... there is a reason hairdressers go to school for up to 4 years to learn this stuff. You are mixing chemicals to put on your hair and scalp, If you mix the wrong peroxide, or leave it in too long your hair could break off or turn to jelly, If you don't leave it long enough it will go orange (and that is NOT a good look) not to mention the reactions you could get on your skin.

In order to lighten tinted hair you need to use bleach, and I strongly recommend you get a professional to do it for you.

It's alot harder than you think.

If the color seems a bit strong, don閳ユ獩 worry--it takes a week or so for the color to fully oxidize and tone down. Plus, you may not be used to the color just yet. Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks to get used to a change like that.

If they added red, red normally doesn't stick around long. It's one of the colors that washes out fairly quickly.

I just had my hair dyed dark red a week ago by a professional and it's almost gone.

Be very cautious about dyeing over new hightlights. I wouldn't even attempt it unless you're experienced with the color wheel and know what base color cools off red hues.

If you have a wig shop in your area, go and try some on. This will give you a great idea of how colors look on you before you change color again and perhaps don't like it.

You could always go back to the salon where you had the highlights done and tell them you don't like it and to change it.

Dyeing your hair is sometimes damaging, so ensure if you do dye it, it's something you can live with for a long time.

I've been at the cheeto orange stage before. Right before my senior pics, I placed golden brown highlights in my hair. The box said they were for dark hair. Big mistake. 80 bucks later my hair was shimmering with red and blonde highlights. Hairstylists are the only people who can truly highlight your hair. They need to take out the color a little at a time to prevent damage and the soda effect. Trust me. It's worth your money.

Yes you will but they will be subtler and be shades of the new colour. You never know, it might actually look more natural and pretty! I use a caramel shade for my base colour, and stripe it with copper and gold...when I re-colour I usually restripe, but even before I do, the stripes are subtley there, and I think it looks cool. I guess you'll just have to see and then you can decide how to deal with it.

as a salon owner and cosmetologist I would suggest going to a salon and have them color your hair. You have to lift or lighten the black color in your hair (if it was colored black)to a couple of shades lighter than the color you actually want and then recolor it to the color you want and blond streaks should be the same color or so close that it looks like the sun highlighted your hair. I do this all the time for my clients but it is a pain in the but cause it takes so long! lightening the hair from black is really hard on the hair so it should be done with a baby bleach. Your salon should know what you are talking about! DO NOT do it yourself unless you want a mess!

Pretty much any Kool-Aid flavor will do, just pick the color you want, mix it up a little strong (ie less water) to make a paste and put it where you want to highlights. i have grey hairs too, but not in front. they are coming in at the top of my hair and i know i'm gonna dye it really soon. if u go to a salon that does highlight placement well, they should be able to cover the greys with the right foiling technique. or u can just do a demi-permanent all over your hair. its stronger than a semipermanent, but still fades out instead of you having to grow out the color. the problem is, it wont lighten your hair, it will just change the color of your greys to blend them in.

Assess the health of your hair currently. Is it free of split ends or damage? Does it break if you comb it wet? Have you done any highlighting within the last month? If it appears healthy, and resilient, you can try to use a lightener to bleach it light blond, then use a toner(Sally's carries Wella toners for this purpose)to get the brassiness and uneven look out of the freshly bleached hair. Don't leave on the lightener for more than 35 minutes or your asking for trouble. If you put it under a plastic shower cap while bleaching, that will help lighten it. Use a light neutral blonde to tone it, like a 9 or 10N. Sally's should have all this. Going to a pro is still best, though.
