Whats less damaging to hair, highlights and low lights or dying it back to natural color?

Coloring it back to your natural color will probably be better in the long run. Getting highlights means you will be putting bleach in your hair, which is really damaging. Highlights/lowlights will need a lot of upkeep, so you will have to get them re-done every month or so, causing a lot more damage than coloring it back to the natural color and then just leaving it alone. After you decide what to do, use a color-saving shampoo and conditioner (even if you are just coloring it back to your natural color, because it will fade out if you dont use the right products). I especially love Redken's Color Extend shampoo and conditioner, and I use the Color Extend Treatment once or twice a week (it is AMAZING!).

Both are damaging to a certain extent, but getting highlights is always the most damaging because you use bleach to get them, and bleach fries your hair, even the little parts you're getting highlighted. Low lights aren't as bad, but highlights...*shudder*.

Well, i have had both. So, from experience, i would say dying it back to your natural hair color. Highlights and low lights require a lot of up-keep, and you will have to get it re done every month or so which is consistanly damaging your hair. If you dye it your natural color, then when your hair grows out, it will match so no re-dying.

My hairdresser told me there both bad but highlights are the worst compared to hair dye. The ingredients in hair highlighting is a lighting bleach. The lighting bleach formulation contains peroxide. Hair color is similar to that but not as damaging.

With dye you have to take good care of your hair no matter what color you use
