What are the risks in getting hair highlights for the first time?

I'm a highschool junior and my hair is naturally thick and black. Right now I think that its healthy and it feels and looks nice... But I REALLY want to get brown highlights before the month ends. If I get highlights will my hair still be as smooth and thick? How will I maintain its texture after I get my highlights? What are the risks for my hair? Is there any dangers in getting highlights?

There arent dangers for the first time. If you get them done regularly it can end up making the hair dry. Just try deep conditioning the har once a week. I suggest you buy Aussie 3 minute mirace, and once a week, apply it on the night time to wet hair, sleep with it on, and then wash in the morning. Do this also after your har has been dyed and it wont dry it out or damage it. Hope this has helped

Small steps at first, less is more.

Your hair will still be as smooth and as thick, if you keep your hair well conditioned and trimmed frequently.

a good professional conditioner is "joice- kpak, reconstructer" and a good high street (cheeper) one is "aussie, 3 minute miracle".

Also, use a heat protective spray whenever you apply heat to your hair e.g- hairdryer, straightners, curling tongs.

The risks for your hair are very low as your only getting "brown" highlights, an your hair is stronge as its thick. There are very few dangers in getting highlights, the only one to be concerned about is drying your hair out, but as long as you keep it well conditioned and trimmed, your hair wil be fine.

The health of your hair shouldn't be a problem. If your hairstylist is worth their salt, they'll condition it well after the coloring. You just have to keep it up with a rich, COLOR SAFE, shampoo and conditioner. I use Catwalk Oatmeal and Honey Comfort Food For Damaged Hair. My hair isn't damaged, but it's extremely moisturizing and smells delicious.

The texture should be fine. Don't get huge 'chunks' the first time, though. Get small, thin highlights that just accent the prettiness of your hair. You may consider only getting face-framing highlights that will give you an idea of what you will look like with a little bit of brown. I would advise a caramel type color if you want to go lighter (don't go blonde, it will look fake unless you have other colors dyed in as well...). It will look more natural and give you the depth that one color doesn't have.

The only danger in getting highlights is a bad stylist. If they leave the bleach/color in too long, it can severely damage your hair, and make it break off at the ends. Ask around and get recommendations from friends that have colored hair and see who they go to. Then, talk to your stylist and tell them EXPLICITLY what you want. It's not their fault if you don't like it and you didn't give them a detailed description of what you want. If you do tell them what you want, and it still doesn't look great, a good stylist will offer to fix it.

And, let's face it. It's easier to put dark dye on top of lighter dye than it is to vice versa.

Happy dyeing!!
